Pleasantville (Old Newbie Starting City)

Continent: Laenor

Description:
  • This was the old newbie starting city before the tutorial and Dortlewall were created
  • It's still a place to visit for the explore experience and it is closer to the "center" of Laenor with many other newbie areas around it.
  • Be warned: There are several death traps down in the caverns. I've died more exploring them than any other "newbie" area I've visited.
Quests:

  • None that I know of.
Equipment:
  • None that I know of.
Open Questions:
  • Do wizards see it when you "knock" on their doors?
  • What is up with the mushroom room in the caverns?
  • Ok, what is up with the flooded blood insta-death room?
  • Also what is up with the wild magic prism?
    • I know it removes magic effects from you, but why?

Notes:

Pleasantville City Map:
  • Note: You only get explore experience inside shops (and in the caverns beneath the city). You will not get any in the garden or streets
  • To the south there is a grove/garden where there are a lot of critters to play with (kill)
    • There are towers to various wizards of the game in the grove. You can "knock door" to see if they are on.
    • DISCLAIMER: This blog is not responsible for any wizard related damage that may occur if you knock on their door!
  • In the northern room the the Level Advance area you can find the old Batmud tutorials. There is no real reason to go through these as the new tutorial in Dortlewall is much, much better and more enjoyable.
  • The restaurant-bakery is a good place if you need cheep food. You can usually find free food elsewhere, but this is a quick no-fuss option.
    • This also leads us to the baker's cellar...
  • If you go into the center of Pleasantville there is a well. You can "enter well" to go into the caverns beneath the city.
Baker's Cellar:
  • If you go down into the basement of the bakery there are two rats.
    • If you kill them, they drop their heads.
    • You can then take the heads back up and give them to the baker for 1 platinum coin (worth 10 gold) a piece
  • In the basement you can "move barrels" to open up a secret entrance to the north
  • In the next room you can "search rubbish" but there isn't anything useful there
  • There are also lots of rats for you to kill and collect their heads
  • In the western "dark corner" room you can "search hole" to find some gold coins
Caverns Underneath the Well:
  • There's various creatures to kill down here.
  • Going east, then north, then west to the cavern you'll find some gnomes who are frantically asking for your help with a boulder.
    • There were also lots of warnings about fungus written on the walls leading up to this room.
  • If you "pull boulder" it initiates a strength check to see if you can move it. My character had 23 strength, so I had to do it about 50 times before I succeeded. But it eventually worked so there is hope!
    • When you succeed and move the boulder, all the gnomes will leave the room and go east
  • In the next room there are all sorts of mushrooms.
    • I could not see how to interact with them though
  • Going down to the second level of the caverns, you quickly come upon a cavern with a mysterious blue flame in the middle of it
    • Despite the room message saying you have a strong desire to touch the flame, DO NOT DO IT.
    • When I touched the flame it nearly killed me, doing around 300 damage
    • Being in the room though, the flame will heal you like a campfire
  • IMPORTANT: In the room underwater if you stay there it will instant-kill you after around 30 seconds.
    • A wet and slithery voice keeps screaming about "Blood!" in that room.
    • It may take several tries to move back north as the water slows you down
  • I started to have "see magic" randomly pop up in my status for a second at a time. Which was weird
  • Continuing on, I found a wild magic prism in a room. I touched it since I don't learn how to be safe.
    • You feel like some magic has just been drained off you.
    • The prism flashes brightly!
    • The white fire within the prism crackles.
    • You are no longer stunned.
  • After I did that, I stopped getting the "see magic" status effect. Touching the prism again didn't do anything or produce the message above again.
    • Ok, upon further testing if you have any magic effects, toughing the prism will remove them. So for example if I cast mirror image, it would remove that protection and stun me if I touch the crystal.
  • Going east is a dead end. It "looks" like a boring room but if you "search rags" you get the following message:
    • You dig around the rags but find nothing of interest...
    • Wait, what's that? There's a large toadlike creature standing against the wall near the opening to the west, apparently prowling to catch you when you leave! Perhaps you could sneak west..
    • If you "sneak west" you can get out of the room without a fight
    • If you just go west, a creeper will jump out and attack you.
  • There is a kobold shaman chewing on mushrooms at the end of the hall. Only reason I mention this is that it made me think of the mushroom room earlier.
  • Going down into the spider filled next level, my main warning is be careful about the aggressive king spider.
    • It is around a 9k EXP monster so it may be tougher than what you normally expect in a newbie area
  • Ok, wait, I was not expecting the beast that was the aggressive queen spider.
    • She is worth over 20k EXP and drops a mithril crown
