Arelium Clock Tower

Continent: Laenor

Description:
  • Very small newbie area in the center of Arelium.
  • Represents the underlying code that runs Batmud
  • Go to the center of town. The clock tower is surrounded by fountains with a door to it on the west side
  • This area was recoded in December 2025, which is really neat. A lot of Easter eggs were added along with two area quests.
Quests:

  • Area Quest: Clock Tower
    • You need to figure out how to restart a broken system.
  • (Secret) Area Quest: Reattach the orphan process
    • You need to lead the orphan process back to its mother
Equipment:
  • Blue boots of water walking
    • This is a reward from completing the area quest
    • As the name implies, if you wear the boots you can walk on water as if you had the spell "water walking" cast on you.
    • Also grants +1 STR, +1 DEX, +1 CON, +1 INT, +1 WIS
    • The boots have a max level limit of 60
Open Questions:
  • Where is the parent lag monster?

Notes:

Entrance:
  • Initially inside the clocktower you can "climb rungs" to visit the clock caretaker
    • If you "ask caretaker about counterpart" they ask if their counterpart in Dortlewall sent you as they need help.
    • If you "ask caretaker about help" they say one of the machines has stopped and they need your help restarting it.
  • When you go down the stairs into the clocktower there is an orphan process looking for its mother
    • If you ask process about mother, it will ask you to take it to its mother...
    • If you "ask process about yes" it will say just type "follow" and it will follow you.
    • If you are doing the quest, type follow....
    • WARNING: the process will very slowly follow you and if you leave it in a room with any of the other processes (including non-aggressive monsters) it will kill them instantly. So you need to clear out the maze before leading the process
    • The goal is to lead the child to it's parent in the maze portion of the clock.
Northern Parts of Clock:
  • In the North control room there is a warning not to touch the buttons
    • If you "touch buttons" acid will fall down and do around 50 damage. The acid has a delay t though so you can press the buttons again and nothing happens.
  • There is also a linkdead player in the room which you can not kill or interact with.
    • Sometimes it will change to "a player recovering from linkdead" in which case you can kill them though.
  • If you go north to the storage room there is  a shelf of items "due in two weeks" that if you look repeatedly provides a couple of inside jokes about "upcoming" projects the wizards are workng on.
  • More importantly, in the storage room if you "look at boxes" you will reveal a secret room!
    • There are five aggressive small errors in the next room. Pretty easy to kill though.
    • In the dark closet, "search bins" to reveal a piece of self replicating code. It will be put directly in your inventory.
Eastern Parts of the Clock:
  • In the dead player room there is a piece of dead code
    • It is undead of course ;p
  • In the east control room is an anvil
    • I'm not sure what that is for. But it's a weird place to put an anvil
    • If you wield the kludge from the wizard you can "strike anvil with kludge" which creates some noise but doesn't do much else.
  • In the east control room if you "search papers" you will find an old LPC manual.
    • If you read the manual, it will stun your character for a few seconds!
    • If you are wondering about LPC, it's the programming language Batmud is coded in! [Link]
  • A file containing bad code will block you from progressing into the dull gray room
    • Luckily it is pretty easy to kill
  • In the dull gray room with the Big Error is a bundle of cables
    • If you "wriggle through cables" it will take you to a server room
  • In the server room is a broken VAX server
    • You can "insert code into machine" if you found the self replicating code
    • You can "insert manual into machine" if you found the LPC manual
    • You can "insert kludge into machine" if you grabbed the kudge from the newbie wizard
    • This will complete the area quest!
  • The reward text for the area quest is:
    • You successfully kludge the kludge into place. You feel really clever about using this horrible kludge, but it seems to fit perfectly. With the final piece inserted the vax thrums to life and hot air starts pouring out of the vents. Lights on the computer start blinking. You feel something shift in the world as it starts processing.
    • Congratulations! You have just completed Clock tower!
    • You receive 2685 gold as a reward for completing the quest.
    • You receive 2 training points.
    • A reward materializes in front of you and drops into your hands. The reward is blue boots of water walking.
Center Clock Maze:
  • In the mass of machinery is a maze that you can wander around. It isn't a maze you can really map though.
    • There are two main "paths" through it. One to a newbie wizard, and the other to a baby lag monster.
    • The baby lag monster drops a watch which ... isn't that helpful since you can set alarms in real life ... but is neat from a roleplaying perspective.
    • The newbie wizard drops a horrible looking kudge, which is technically a hammer
    • Be warned, there is an aggressive zombie process in some of these rooms as well.
  • There is also an invisible ghost of a dead player in one of the rooms.
    • To see it you'll need either the spell "see invisible" or be wearing a ring of see invisiblity.

  • As a quick reference (starting from the dead player room):
    • (N, N, N) Leads to the lag room
    • (N, N, N, S, S) Leads to the Wizard room
  • Off of the wizard room is a special "Process Table" room with a parent process in it.
    • Unlike other creatures in this area, the parent process seems to be able to respond to questions.
    • If you ask the process about child, it will ask if you saw any of its children wandering around.
    • If you "ask process about yes" it will say bring them their children for a reward.
    • Quest reward text for brining the child process to its mother:
      • Orphan Process arrives from east.
      • Congratulations! You have just completed Reattach the orphan process!
      • You receive 2579 gold as a reward for completing the quest.
      • You receive 2 training points.
      • You feel more experienced!
      • The orphan attaches itself to the parent process, it warms your heart to see happy processes.
