Newbie Mines

Continent: Laenor

Level Limit:
  • Maximum level of 30. Hard limit.
Description:
  • Good newbie area.
  • Make sure you have some way to see in the dark
  • Not only are there lots of little monsters to kill, but there are also two level quests
  • Note: You may need to team up with other newbies for LQ17. It can be a tricky one to kill the guardian by yourself.
  • Make sure you can see in the dark. Not a lot of sunlight down in the mines...
Quests:

  • LQ16: Black Butterfly
    • Locations of the butterflies are marked on the map. The color of them (including the black one) will be randomly chosen.
    • Kill the non-black butterflies, collect their paint, and then give the paint to the black butterfly to complete the quest.
    • Colors you need to collect: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Violet, Orange, Cyan
    • This quest requires wandering around to the different spawn locations and killing butterflies until you get lucky enough to collect enough of the colors. In that way it is very similar to a World of Warcraft quest ;p
      • Note, I "think" I only needed five the paint colors above and not all seven of them.
  • LQ17: Rob Vault
    • Make it to the vault (highlighted in blue on the map) and kill the Skeleton dwarf inside
    • Warning: The skeleton dwarf will block you from leaving the vault. Once you go in there, be prepared to kill them without fleeing. So you might want to make sure you are not carrying too much unspent EXP...
Equipment:
  • A shining scimitar <red glow>
    • Obtained by the Unarmored soldier at the end of the northern "Narrow Tunnel"
    • Worth around 3765 gold when sold
    • Not sure of its statistics.
  • Scroll of enchant armour
    • Occasionally drops from black puddings. You can sell this to other players for between 5k and 20k gold!
    • The scroll gives equipment a red aura. Nothing else has been verified about this beyond the cosmetic impact, but some players think it may do something else so there's usually a healthy market of highbies wanting to get this enchant "just in case".
    • Since high level players can't go into the Newbie mines, this is a very good way for new players to make a lot of money.
Open Questions:
  • What is the small hole in the hallway, and what do you need to insert into it?
  • Is there anything going on with the fireplace in the orc cavern?
  • What does the small key unlock? The silver key found in the bed unlocks the two doors I found in Level 2.

Map of Newbie Mines

Notes:

Entrance (Hole and Hallway):
  • Going north through the nice hallways, in the small room "search pillows" to find a silver key
    • The key does NOT unlock the small hole by the paintings.
    • The key unlocks the door behind one of the butterflies on level 2 of the dungeon.
    • It also unlocks the door behind the valiant guards
  • At the hallway room with the creepy painting, you can "enter painting" to find the backroom.
  • In the painting room is a small mouse eating cheese. If you kill it, it drops a small key.
    • Not sure what this key unlocks...
  • Going forward you find yourself in the Drunk Duck's Winery!
    • In the top of the winery you can "kick sink" and it will occasionally spawn a black pudding.
  • Guess it is time to explore the mines and dungeon level 1.
Dungeon Level 1:
  • Going down the staircase you will encounter a green butterfly. Killing these butterflies is what is required to complete LQ16 as they drop droplets of colored paint.
    • Once you have all of the colors of the rainbow, you can give the paints to the black butterfly to complete the quest
  • Beware attacking the puddings. They can occasionally split in two, so now you are fighting two monsters vs. just one.
  • To go down to level 2, someone (doesn't need to be you), must tie a rope to the pole. There should be a piece of rope that spawns in this room.
  • Also, the respawn times of monsters around here is extremely quick. You won't run out of things to kill even if there are multiple newbies wandering around the mines.
Dungeon Level 2:
  • There are many more monster types on the second level. They all are pretty much the same though when fighting them. Notable exceptions:
    • Giant spider: Still pretty easy, but worth a lot more EXP.
    • Skeleton Dwarfs: They can be very tricky for newbies.
    • Orc-captains: By themselves they are not so tough, but if there are three in a room, and they will all attack you at once, they can be tricky.
    • Black puddings are tougher than their baby black puddings
  • Note: Some of the monsters change types. Aka it might be a killer bee one time, and a newt the next. But they are still pretty much the same when fighting them.
  • You can find a zippo in the west tunnel which can help if you are running out of light.
  • The skeleton dwarves in the west tunnel block access to the area behind them.
    • The area behind them has aggressive beholders, so that may not be a bad thing...
    • If you attack one, the other one will join the fight.
    • They will pursue you a bit if you run away.
  • Going in the east tunnel, there are a lot of "tougher" creatures that will block you from going forward.
    • The black puddings will turn aggressive if you attack on of the other black puddings. Be really careful when getting past the brown pudding for LQ17 that you only target it and not the other black puddings in the room.
  • In the orc cavern, there was a fireplace, but I couldn't really interact with it.
    • This seemed like a weird room. Considering how hard it was to get to with the three blocking orc-captains, this room seemed like a let-down.
  • The black butterfly seemed to spawn in several different butterfly locations. So you may have to hunt for it.
    • When you give it all the paint colors you will complete the level quest and receive the following message:
      • Butterfly flaps its coal-black wings rapidly.  Suddenly you notice its wings are not black any more -- they shine in all colours!  The butterfly flies happily away. Congratulations! You have just completed Black butterfly! You receive 342 gold as a reward for completing the quest
  • The two doors on this level can be unlocked using the key found in the bedroom.
  • You can continue through the northern door where there will be a long hallway where multiple monsters are blocking each path to the next room. If you get all the way to the end you get the following message:
    • You have finally reached the end of the narrow tunnel. You feel you're a real adventurer now.
    • There is no other benefit for getting to the end of the tunnel than bragging rights and a feeling of accomplishment.
Rob the Vault: Level Quest 17:
  • The vault can be found if you go along the Eastern Mining Tunnels and into the Cavern of Beholders.
    • This involves making it past several blocking monsters including a brown putty, and two skeleton dwarves.
  • As the name implies, in the cavern of beholders, there are three beholders that wander around.
    • They can wander into the vault which is very awkward, as you can't leave the vault until you kill the vault guardian
  • Inside the vault the vault guardian, (a single skeleton dwarf), will block you from leaving.
    • This means its a single round death match. Either you kill them, or they kill you.
    • I ... may ... have died but been able to run back fast enough after getting resurrected that I was able to finish killing them and complete the quest.
  • When you kill the guardian, you will be awarded the level quest. Here is the message when you complete the quest:
    • Congratulations! You have just completed Rob vault!
    • You receive 4970 gold as a reward for completing the quest
