Arelium Church of All Gods (Startloc)

Continent: Laenor

Overview:
  • This is the default starting location of all players
  • There are many different important NPCs here for Newbies
  • There are both good and evil monsters here which is nice if you need to change your alignment
  • There's several different "subsections" to this area providing a lot of variety
Quests:

  • For the Viking Event, there is a chest in the graveyard where you can turn in items to win it.
  • Ring of the quest masters (provides a newbie ring that is nice)
Equipment:
  • Ring of the quest masters
    • Can be different types of resist or +con

Special Explore Room:

  • The vault in the basement after you touch the cube is supposedly a special explore room.
Open Questions:
  • How do you get to Mordain in the graveyard (it's by the giant skeleton that I can't seem to interact with)

Notes:

Church (Starting Location):
  • This is the default player starting location. Unless you have changed it, this is where you will start your game when you log in for the day
  • The most important item here is the portal. You'll often find yourself using the command "transport esirus"
    • Esirus is accessible from all the major cities in batmud through these portals. This makes it a common meeting place.
    • When people say they want to meet at "Vlad", they really mean they want to meet in the center of Esirus where this portal leads you.
    • Esirus is where most of the merchant carts are to buy items, and where most players provide services
    • There is also a sauna in Esirus which is a good way, (and really the only way unless you have a spell), to remove poison if you have been poisoned.
  • There is also a board here which will tell you what events have recently occurred. This is useful to check to limit walking into some instant death situation.
    • "look a board"
  • The area to the west is blocked by the Guardian of Dreams. Since it is a no spell/skill room, I suspect the area past this is for wizards only.
  • To the north is the wedding chapel. If you find a need for this, I'm super happy for you and wish you and your partner the best!!!!
  • Continuing on to the east, there is a fountain and a tour guide
    • The tour guide will take you on a 20 minute tour. I did not find it that useful since it was hard to keep situational awareness of all the places they were leading me, but don't let me stop you from taking it.
    • I always drink from this fountain when heading out to go adventure. It helps limit issues later and unless I'm traveling in deserts/volcanos my character rarely needs to drink otherwise.
  • If you keep going east you will end up in Batmud city/Arelium proper. That's a blog post entry for a different day...
  • To the south is the death room. If you "look at lens" you will see all the times people have died this boot.
Graveyard (And player service areas like the Newbie Warehouse):
  • If you go to the north, you will end up at the Newbie Help Warehouse which is one of the most important rooms for players under level 20.
    • First off, always "bow damogran". Otherwise he'll kick you out when you ask for something
    • If you are level 29 or lower you can ask for FREE equipment and spellcaster scrolls
      • The one catch is that the equipment will be bound to you so others can't use it and you can't sell it. Still, free equipment is a huge bonus!
    • If you are over level 30 you can donate equipment. Doing so puts you in a lottery to win some money, though don't expect to make much. This is really for helping people out.
    • If you are under level 16 you can also get a newbie orb here which has all sorts of helpful powers and features.
  • Going west from the church yard is a professor from raccoon university. This is a holdover from a Halloween even in 2014 and you can probably ignore him
  • Going north will lead you to Mortis's room. You can sell high level corpses to him and buy those corpses if you want...
    • He also offers reincarnations, but charges 20% of all your TOTAL experience, so don't do this. Instead get a reincarnation from a player instead.
  • If you go south, you will find yourself in the player freezer facility. This allows you to put limits on when you can play. This is a good parental control, or something you can do to keep batmud interfering with your real life.
  • Going into the graveyard and going north, you'll find the graveyard grounds keeper
    • If you kill him, he drops a shovel which is super helpful for newbies as you can now bury your corpses!
  • Going further north in the graveyard is an ancient chest
    • This is for the Viking event. You can put the items you get from killing invading Vikings into this chest. Once you reach 20 items, you win the event.
  • If you go further into the cemetery there are a number of aggressive monsters and undead
    • They are all very easy though and made for newbies to kill
  • To the far west of the cemetary there is a grave you can climb down. At the end of it is a gast who is harder than the other monsters here (though still pretty easy)
    • There is also an unknown body laying here
    • If you grab the flowers from earlier in the graveyard and drop them in this room, the corpse will give you a gem! It is called the Mystical gem of life.
    • Take this ring to the ring shop in Arelium and give it to Barnum. He will then give you the ring of the quest masters!!!
Church Tower (and wine cellar/basement):
  • Going back to the church starting location and going south takes you to the church tower
  • In the lounge, if you "look at fireplace" it reveals a secret exit heading east
    • If you go into the secret room there is a small pile of gold coins (around 100-300 gold). This will refresh periodically and is a nice bonus to players starting out.
  • Continuing to go south, you'll arrive at some stairs and the tower. There's a lot of priests and monks in the tower and they all drop coins making this a good area for newbies to get money and exp at the same time.
    • The priests/monks get tougher the higher up in the tower you go, also making it easy to progress as your character moves through their first few levels.
  • Going to the west of the church tower is the kitchen.
    • There usually is a loaf of fresh bread so if you need food this is a reliable way to get some for free.
  • In the basement/wine cellar there is a decomposing dwarf in on of the rooms pointing to a button in the wall.
    • If you push the button it opens a hidden trapdoor that takes you to a different area (The Black Opal)
  • If you go down the normal stairwell to level two of the basement you will find yourself in the torture rooms of the church
    • Be careful since there are some aggressive monks down here that may be tough for a newbie to handle
Adventure of the Black Opal Eye:
  • The map is loosely based on the old Dungeons and Dragons Adventure of the Black Opal Eye:
    • Here is the dungeon master's guide: Link
  • Note, this area seems half coded though, as many of the interesting features of it don't seem to actually do anything...
  • There are some aggressive bandits near the beginning of the map. If they give you problems, you can often just run past them quickly.
  • In the hall of rubble (where there are goblins) if you "search rubble" you will sometimes find a gem.
    • There are 10 gems total you can find
    • Each time you search there is a small chance you'll find the gem. So keep searching
    • I usually just type: "20 search rubble" to queue up 20 searches at once.
    • You can sell these gems at the Arelium general store. Most of them go for about 30 gold each.
  • Continuing on to the north, there are some curtains you can pass through to end up in the tomb of souls
    • You can "look at book" to get some backstory.
    • I don't think this area was completed since I never was able to interact with the caskets that the witches are trapped in
  • Going to the west, watch out for two aggressive panthers in a prison cell.
  • I also saw a wandering minotaur. At one point it wasn't aggressive, but in another room it was aggressive
    • Note: I later found the minotaur chained up. You can "free minotaur" and they will start wandering and become aggressive
    • The corpse is useful as you can sacrifice it at the alter on the east side of this dungeon
  • Going to the east of the dungeon, there is an obstructed stairway that you can not climb
    • This is really annoying since there is an "up" in the available directions to leave the room
  • In the lounge there is a chest. If you "open chest" then a hidden entrance to the vault will appear
  • In the vault room if you "look at cube" another hidden entrance will appear
    • There is nothing inside this hidden room as far as I can tell though...
    • According to some posts I've seen, this may be a special explore room!
  • Going to the switch room, there is an altar of sacrifice there and exits north, east, and west that each lead to a randomly generated maze
    • If you "sacrifice corpse" of the minotaur here, it will transport you to the pirate ship
    • In the mazes, you need to drop coins to see where you have been before. If you pick the wrong route it'll take you back one room.
    • At the end of each maze is a lever you can pull. Once you pull all three levers it will open a secret door below the altar leading down
Pirate Ship
  • You are teleported into the bilge. If you wait here too long, an aggressive sea monster will appear and attack you.
    • The sea monster is much tougher than any of the other monsters in the church, so be careful
    • If you want some backstory, you can read the paper here
  • If you kill Roscoe, he drops a key that unlocks the door.
  • To leave the pirate ship, "walk plank" in Port Side room. Then "jump".
    • This will take you back to the altar of sacrifice
